Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

defamation at work

A fellow employee of mine started a rumor that I am on cocaine. Several men at work have spread this viscious rumor about me. what legal action if any can I take.

If you could prove that both the statement is false and that the statement has hurt you at work or in your life (not your feelings but something like you have been passed over for promotion or someone you know has shunned you because of the rumor) then you have some shot at winning a law suit. The issue is, does this loser have anything to collect from. A Defamation suit is expensive to bring and most lawyers will not take them unless they fell they have a chance to collect or that you will pay them up front.
