Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

I was fired recently after a 18 month period but hold a contract which states limited amount of employment of 3 years. Is it legal to speak to the owner or his lawyer (intro company) and state my right to severance benefits, do to breach of contract, and or warn them about potentially filing a law suit if I feel their offer is unsatisfactory? Could it count as extortion in the state of NY or NJ if I try to handle it myself? I'm not stating something which is untrue. I know using a lawyer would be wiser, but I would like things done as quickly and quietly as possible so I can continue my career asap.

A lawyer cannot threaten a lawsuit as that would be extortion however if you go talk to your employer's lawyer and advise you believe they are breach of contract by not honoring the payments due they will understand the liability their client could face.
