Legal Question in Personal Injury in New York

Our mail carrier entered our home when they thought no one was there, walked around then opened the bedroom door and realized I was home ( I work nights, by the way I have a note on the door to please not knock during the day or disturb my because I am sleeping). After they saw me in the bed sleeping they rushed out the front door, I saw the car leaving the driveway (we are in a rural village and they deliver to us in regular cars), I did not think it was them that had come into the bedroom because I was sleeping, I thought it was my husband but after a while I got up and I noted that he was not home and the front door was left open (we use the garage door to enter and exit the house), my indoor cats were ready to get out through the doorway but thank goodness they didn't and it was a month or so ago when the weather was very cold. MY husband came home and I asked him if he had come in the bedroom and used the front door, he said no. The mail and a few packages were left on the floor in front of the door in the hallway where they could have been tripped over. We do not always lock the door, if we are home or just run to the store we don't, my husband had been gone longer than he expected.

I feel very violated and creeped out that someone who is really a stranger to us would come in to our home, walk through it, open the door to our bedroom and then leave our front door wide open, now I am paranoid about it.

I did notify the post office but have not heard anything back from them, should I press formal charges? I have been so stressed out about this I have a hard time getting to sleep now.
