If I just send a negative opionion to an individual, not a company, or post something for the public to see about someone, can I be sued?

Potentially. I believe you are referring to defamation claims.

The statement must be a lie (being negative is not enough...it must be false)

The statement must be made to a third party- individual or company

The statement must cause financial injury to the other person
