Legal Question in Consumer Law in North Carolina

Is it illegal to purchase an item using a coupon where the coupons is not for the exact item purchased (example .75 off Kleenex 3-bundle pack vs. actually purchased Kleenex single box) or to purchase an item where the item purchased doesn't match the item at all (example $1.00 off Diet Coke vs. actually purchased Diet Pepsi)?

Not necessarily. It would be fraud to alter the coupon to appear to be for another product than what it was intended. If you take a coupon for say Kleenex to Foodlon and then you buy the store brand tissues and the store allows you to use the coupon than that is a bargain between a merchant and consumer...legal at any time. That is just like you buyin an Ipad for $50.00 because a store decides to cut you a deal.

Now if the coupon is altered to trick the merchant into taking it, a crime has been committed.
