Legal Question in Family Law in North Carolina

I was married in North Carolina in 2003... the marriage was very brief (apx.8 months). I never filed for a divorce from this person. Last year he married another woman so i assumed that he must have somehow divorced me without my knowlege.. I cannot find any record of a divorce however, I've contacted the county in which we were actually married, and they told me that we still are in fact married to eachother! Would they know if he had ever in fact actually divorced me (for instance if he had done it in a different county or something)? I have no idea how to get a definitive answer about the status of our marriage, and would really appreciate some direction.

Thank You!

It is possible for him to have divorced you without you knowing. So, the best way for you to find out if you are divorced is to ask him directly and if so, for him to send you a copy of the judgment. Otherwise, you are basically stuck looking for a needle in a haystack because you will have to check every possible venue he may have filed in - not fun! Alternatives to narrowing down your search if he is uncooperative with you are to inquire of his family members and friends if they know anything about the divorce and where it took place. Of course there is always the possibility there was no divorce and he may be guilty of bigamy - a felony in NC. Best of luck to you!
