Legal Question in Family Law in North Carolina

Separation & Custody

I am trying to separate from my husband and we both want primary custody of our 13 and 11 year old children. He has an attorney and I cannot afford one. Is there somewhere I can look for help? Can I win in court without an attorney? We are both fit parents. I would like joint cusody. I'm just scared to represent myself but I really don't have money for an attorney. We both make about the same income and he is borrowing funds from someone. Thanks for any guidance you can give.

Re: Separation & Custody

Making motions, examining witnesses, dealing with rules of evidence, researching and understanding the law ---- all of this is what we do as attorneys. Certainly being fully represented by an attorney is always better, in my opinion.

But we recognize that some folks can't afford it. I have seen individuals adequately represent themselves especially when they have an attorney prepare the proper documents and get some coaching.

I have seen others miserably fail under the pressure or that they simply were not prepared.

It would certainly be better for you to hire an attorney. If you can't afford one, at least use a service like our Virtual Law Firm to have the proper documents prepared/reviewed.

Best wishes,
