If my ex wife decides the court appointed lawyer my son had is not good enough and gets another lawyer without consulting me , do I still have to pay half

Not unless there is a Court Order and / or Agreement that requires you too or unless you are a legally responsible party due to the type of custody you have. Otherwise, you can tell the lawyer and your ex to seek reimbursement elsewhere. Helpful Hint: I said it all nice like but if it would make you happy - you don't necessarily have to say it nicely!
