Legal Question in Civil Litigation in North Carolina

Rent-A-Center has pressed charges against me for keeping a laptop without paying. I gave it back with no problems, absolutely perfect, and the deal was. If I give the laptop back to them by 7:00, the Manager would drop the charges. My mother, aunt and a police officer was right there when they said that. So, if they don't drop the charges, and we go to court, what will happen when they were supposed to drop the charges? This is in NC by the way.

They are under no obligation to drop the charges. You need to hire a criminal defense attorney to assure this ends well.

This is the kind of thing that happens when you enter into deals and you don't know the law. Rent-A-Center is notorious for using the Court as it's mindless, grinning, bulldog. The problem is once they have unleashed the dog - they can't call him off. Rent-A-Center has no authority to dismiss or 'drop' charges. That power rests solely with the District Attorney. At this point your best bet is to follow Mr. Love's advice and hire an attorney.
