Legal Question in Employment Law in North Carolina

30 day notice ignored by employer

I gave my employer a one month notice of my intention to resign, which is customary in my field. They chose to ignore the notice and terminate me immediately upon my notice, ending my pay one month before I was ready. Are they entitled to do that?

Yes, unfortunately. Unless you had a contract to work for a specific period of time, employment in NC is at-will, and the employer can fire you whenever they want to (unless a statute specifically makes it illegal, e.g. being fired due to race/sex/disability discrimination). That is the risk everyone takes when giving notice of quitting.
