Legal Question in Employment Law in North Carolina

My wife has been working on a job for over 13 years and now they are telling her she is required to work on Saturday. Some employees have to work extra and some don't. Working on Saturday is not and never been a requirement and is not listed in her employee manual. She doesn't mind working some Saturday's but she does not want to work every Saturday. Can she refuse and what can she do if they try to enforce some sort of discipline on her work record?

Unfortunately, there is not much she can do. NC is an at will work state. Employers can change schedules at will...the only rule is that they cannot discriminate against a protected class in doing so. If they require your wife to work Saturdays, and she refuses, they can fire her. Applying for unemployment under those circumstances will also be very difficult.
