Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in North Carolina

About 2 months ago, we moved into a new apartment. Shortly after, I began noticing itchy bumps covering my arms. Assuming it was an allergic reaction of some kind, I didn't give it too much thought. After about a month of dealing with bumps, we found the culprits in our bed last week - bed bugs.

We did a little more searching and found a giant mound of bed bugs, both dead and alive. We left the apartment immediately and haven't been back since. We notified the apartment manager the next morning and she stated that there was a small section in the lease regarding bed bugs. She said that she would send an exterminator, but we would be financially responsible. We can't afford extermination costs, in addition to the new beds and couches that we'll need.

We have never had any problems with bed bugs. I know they can be easily picked up anywhere, but the manager did state to us that this was not the first time dealing with bed bugs in our complex. I know that it's extremely hard to prove where the bed bugs came from, but I feel like the blame should not be solely on us. Is there anything we can do legally?
