Legal Question in Traffic Law in North Carolina

Charlotte-Mecklenburg PD had set up a traffic stop "checkpoint" on a residential road such that all vehicles traveling on that road were stopped. When I was stopped at the checkpoint my drivers license was requested and my vehicle was visually inspected to the extent possible from the exterior. I inquired as to the occasion and the police officer who requested my license said "we don't need one". Does this not violate 4th amendment protection against unreasonable seizure? Do police officers in Charlotte, NC not need to witness or otherwise have reasonable suspicion of illegal activity (which I mean to include but not limit to traffic violations) to stop a citizen while they are driving? If this is illegal, what action can I take to stop it from happening in the future?

Traffic check point stops like you describe are not illegal if the proper procedures are followed.
