Is it legal for an employer to terminate an employee because of scheduling/attendance problems caused by mental health issues of the employee's child?

Maybe. You need to consult local counsel with your specific facts. If you have not been terminated, you might be able to prevent it by following certain procedures. Don't let it sit, contact local counsel and find out exactly what your options are. You might start by contacting a few mental health advocacy agencies in your state, as well as local disability rights centers. Every state has people who do this work, and it can save you a lot of grunt work.
