Legal Question in Personal Injury in Ohio

Rental Property Question

I've recently moved out of an apartment complex in Dublin Ohio. I returned the keys via the night drop at the rental office on the date that my move out notice was given for (notice given within the confins of the lease agreement). The complex is stating that they didn't have access to the unit until approximately 2 weeks after the date that the keys were turned in and are trying to charge me for 1/2 month's rent. Is there a legal standard regarding the termination of a lease dealing with the possesion of the rental unit?

Re: Rental Property Question

Yes. If your lease was a tenancy for year/estate for years, which it probably was, than when the lease is over it's over. Look at your lease to see if there was a provision requiring you to notify the Leasing company that you would not renew the lease. Also and most importantly, if the drop box was the regular place to leave keys/rent/etc., then they have no legal footing to stand on to charge you the 1/2 month rent.

THey were aware that you were moving out at the end of the lease term and in all liklihood had the keys.
