Legal Question in Criminal Law in Oklahoma

Stole Narcotics

I need help. My sister in law who apparently has a pain pill problem was caught stealing. Her neighbor uses the same medicine she does ( Loritab) and when my sister in law ran out of medicine she went into the neighbors home when she was not home and took them. Her neighbor realized that her medicine was missing and confronted my sister in law and she admitted to her neighbor that she did in fact take them and then returned them to her. The neighbor called the police and they took an informal statement from both parties and told her that the neighbor would not press charges but that the DA would have to decide to pursue charges or not. This is her first offense, she has never even had as much as a parking or speeding ticket. What should she expect and what should she do? Should she get an attorney? or just wait? any advice you have would be great. Thank you.

Re: Stole Narcotics

Tough situation. It is impossible to predict what the DA will do in your county. It appears that your sister-in-law has more than a medical problem, but an addiction. My advice to her would be to get treatment immediately, and hire a lawyer to prepare documentation of that fact to the ADA in your county, to hopefully avoid prosecution.
