You will have to establish that you are unable to engage in substantial gainful activity that has lasted or you anticipate will last for at least one year. The medical evidence and opinions are helpful to the Social Security Administration to make this determination.

After your initial application is denied, you can file a request for reconsideration within 60 days and if that is denied you can have a hearing before an administrative law judge. Often if someone is REALLY disabled (and do not die during this period)they wait out this long process and awarded benefits (and back benefits from the date of application).

Don't get discouraged but make sure that all medical or vocational evidence is timely forwarded to Social Security.

Some people with diabetis are able to work, and their diabetis is well-controlled with medication. Other people with diabetis have serious complications, such as visual impairments or neuropathic damage to their feet which may result in the amputation of a foot. Social Security has fairly specific criteria for determining whether a person with diabetis is disabled. I recommend that you find a lawyer in your area who is experienced in the practice of Social Security Disability law. Try the National Organization of Social Security Claimants' Representatives (NOSSCR) which can be found on the internet, to locate an experienced lawyer. In most cases you will pay the lawyer no fee unless you receive a favorable decision on your claim. And be sure you discuss with your lawyer all of the health problems you have, not just those related to diabetis. Social Security disability is determined on a consideration of all impairments you may have, not just the most obvious ones, and sometimes a problem which you might consider minor can be the straw that breaks the camel's back when added to the more serious problems related to diabetis. If you don't get a favorable decision the first time around, don't give up. Request a reconsideration, and if you lose again, request a hearing on your claim. And make sure that your lawyer is informed about every little fact which may be relevant to your claim.
