Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Oregon

collection agency vs drivers licence

Collection agency has my licence suspended for debt they took over for traffic fines I owed. They have refused reasonable payments. They have already added 30% interest. is it legal for a private company to dertermine how much money I have to pay to get my licence back? Or for that matter, to profit that much off a debt owed to a government agency?

Re: collection agency vs drivers licence

Traffic fines are statutorily defined by the State of Oregon. I don't see how the collection agency has anything to do with the suspension of your license. If you believe the fines are invalid you would need to petition for an administrative hearing with the DMV.

Collection agencies can tack on lots of fees and interest but they'll generally compromise if they receive a lump sum.
