The spouse is not directly liable for the husband's credit card debt. I don't know how there can be joint ownership of a credit card. One does not own a credit card. It is a contractual privilege granted by the creditor to the borrower; not an ownership/property right.

There are either co-borrowers or co-applicants or there is a borrower/applicant and an authorized user. So you must first determine which you are. If you are a joint applicant/borrower, then you are liable for the debt. If you are just an authorized user, then you are not. The deceased man's estate may be liable for some or all of the debt, depending on whether he made some of the charges during his life. In such case, you maybe liable for the debt as between you and the credit card company but you may have a claim against the estate for reimbursement. But you first need to determine what you have.
