Once you are a Legal Permanent Resident already, you cannot travel on advance parole. If you plan on being outside the U,S. more than 6 months, you should obtain a re-entry permit.

It is up to the discretion of CBP as to whether or not they feel you have constructively abandoned your LPR by only living in the U.S. for a few weeks per year. This is why you should get the re-entry permit if you are going to study abroad.
