Legal Question in Family Law in South Carolina

I have a 4 yr old son that needs his name changed. When I delivered him, I was at the time married to my Ex husband. My Ex husband is not his father. We are divorced and I had my name legally changed which was in the divorce. What are the steps I need to take to have his name changed and how much does something like this cost?

You can file a Summons and Complaint with the Family Court to get an Order allowing you to change your son's last name, get a new birth certificate and other legal documents with his new name on it. Based on my experience (and this does not consider other attorneys) is is around $750.00 in legal fees, plus Court costs and service of process costs (which vary).

Hopefully, this helps. Please don't consider this legal advice. Contact an attorney to address the specific details of your situation as the advice of your attorney may change if details are more complex.
