Its not illegal to go through a yellow light as long as it remains yellow the entire time. That only makes sense as often a light will turn yellow right as a person is in the middle of the intersection. The problem comes when people see the light turn yellow and know that its going to turn red in a few seconds and don't slow down and try to speed up to get through it, and then it turns red on them.
