Is a internet porn site illegal?

I was wanting to open a internet porn site with some friends and was told that it would be illegal. Is it?

Re: Is a internet porn site illegal?

There is nothing inherently illegal about running such a site. Assuming that you hope to make money off of the site, you will need to comply with whatever local laws govern operating such a business, but that would be true even if the site wasn't pornographic.

Some jurisdictions are more vigilant than others against "obscene" material, and obscenity is judged by local standards. Your post says you are in Tennessee, and my sense is that your local standards are less forgiving than those in other parts of the country. You should probably consult with a local attorney about how to steer clear of prosecutions and civil suits. Keep in mind that you theoretically could be sued and/or prosecuted anywhere people look at your site, be it Tennessee or Timuktu.

There are also a variety of ways you might get yourself into legal trouble while running your business, but they have little if anything to do with the specific nature of your site.
