notice of firing???

my father works for an international corporation. he was called into his boss' office today and handed a letter telling him he was fired. he was told he had 10 minutes to clear his things out and leave!!! the company just had him traveling around the world for 4 weeks straight a week ago. he was told his health insurance coverage was terminated immediately. he is getting two weeks severence pay for working there for working there for the past 2 and 1/2 years. is any of this legal???

In Texas, if you don't belong to a union and you don't have a written contract of employment, and you are paid for all accrued, unused vaction time and benefits, including vested profit-sharing and/or retirement benefits, then you are an employee at will and have only the right to payment in full for all time worked up to the point of termination. That is, termination of an employee at will can be at any time and without reason.

You may check with an employment law specialist on this, particularly if there is an employee handbook or other written company policy that promised additional rights.
