When you booked the room you agreed to certain terms. Somewhere among those terms includes language that the hotel is allowed to charge you for the room once you book it (or if you do not cancel within a certain period of time) even if you do not use the room. For the hotel, a room that is reserved but does not result in a paid use of the room is a loss because they could not reserve the room for anybody else.

There may be terms in the reservation agreement that allow you to avoid the charge when you did not use the room. You would have to check the agreement to see if there are such terms and whether you meet them.
