Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

I'm a Canadian citizen having a child with an American citizen who lives in Texas. He recently left me and I will need to go back to Canada to take care of the child as a single mother. What would I need to do to make sure the child is protected for child support?

You can get a divorce in Texas after the child is born. Only a court can impose child support. However the divorce court may put limitations on where the child can reside and impose visitation rights

I'm not sure what your immigration status is. Since dad is a US citizen, it might be a good idea for the divorce to be in this country.

You need to retain a family law attorney with some knowledge of immigration law.
