Legal Question in Family Law in Utah

My wife and I are talking about getting a divorce. I have no children with her. She had a good job when we got married 6 years ago, but quit when we got married. I have paid off her student loans, paid for all the school that she is currently doing. She receives child support from her ex. All her children have moved out except for 1. This child is in her teens. We sold our house and she kept all the equity. About 80,000 thousand. Will I have to pay alimony? I have already given her everything....

Cory Wall Cory R. Wall, Attorney at Law, P.C.

If you and she are seriously considering getting a divorce and if she's raised the issue/possibility of seeking alimony from you, you really need to get an attorney. The issue of alimony is fairly complicated and there are several factors and variables the court would need to consider in determining whether to award alimony and, if so, how much. It would be extremely difficult for me to answer your quesstion without having a lot more information from you. I offer a free initial consultation if you would like to come and meet with me at which time we could spend some time going over what the issues are relative to a possible alimony claim. You can contact my office at (801) 274-3100. If I'm not available, you can schedule your appointment with my receptionist. Thank you, Cory R. Wall
