my deceased mother left a small note secured by assets which I inherited am I responsible for paying the note?

No, but your mother's estate probably is (assuming
it's a legitimate claim). Assets from her estate must first be used to pay all such creditor claims before you as her beneficiary may receive any distributions from the estate.
