what does possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony mean

It means that the "perp"(perpetrator) of the crime alleged had on his person or nearby (within his immediate area of control) a fireable gun of some type which he may or may not have used in some manner during the time he was engaged in committing the felonious act with which he's been charged. (Having such a weapon in the course of the crime will generally mean an enhanced or more serious penalty than would otherwise be warranted by the circumstances of the crime.)
