When you get into a fight why is it against the law?

The most obvious answer to your question is that you have violated the law by engaging in a fight because the state legislators have saw fit to criminalize such conduct.

If you pick a fight with someone who simply defendants themselves, you would be guilty of assault and battery (or the greater offenses of aggravated malicious wounding, malicious wounding or unlawful wounding depending on if some weapon was involved and the degree of injury suffered).

If the fight is truly mutual conduct then the people involved in it would be guilty of disorderly conduct.
