In the former, the defendant is released to his residence to wear an electronic device(usually affixed to his ankle) which allows officials to monitor his movements at his home and to ensure full compliance with the conditions of his release whereas in the latter the inmate (who has demonstrated good behaviour and low risk ) is released to a so-called "half-way house" or similar facility where he may complete the balance of his sentence and from where he might be allowed to leave during the day to work (or to look for work) or to carry out other activities approved by the community correction officials but to which he must normally return by a certain time in the evening where he will spend the night.
