Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

I consistently care for my 10 month old niece for extended periods of time. Her mother has numerous times stated she doesn't want the baby and then will say, oh it's ok I'll come get her now. She has attempted suicide within the last 4 weeks and left the baby without us knowing where she went for a few days. The father is in the picture but does not offer financial support for the baby and always puts the baby off on me or my mother in law. What legal rights do I have to have the baby permanently placed in my care.

Well, you could certainly first discuss this issue with the parents to see whether they would be willing to formally relinquish their child custody rights to you or even allow you to adopt your niece, but if they refuse to consider these options, I would suggest that you arrange for a consultation with a local attorney who

handles domestic relations issues in the Commonwealth for further advice on the matter.
