Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Virginia Birth Certificate Question

I was married to a man in 2008 but gave birth to a child that was not his. I listed unknown on her birth cert and now I can not find a way to add her real father's name to the BC without paying a lawyer $800 or more to get a court order. Please help. The state is Virginia and the location is Hanover County.

Re: Virginia Birth Certificate Question

You should checkout the Hanover County Circuit Court's website to determine whether they may have forms with instructions that could be used to petition to add the father's name to the child's birth certificate. (Unless the father agrees to have his name added, a hearing would have to be held and, perhaps, a paternity test ordered.)

In the event that a lawyer is required for your particular case, you could contact one of the low cost legal services providers in the Hanover County area to see whether they could assist you with an attorney.
