Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Virginia

My 8yr old was visiting a friend's home and was given an iPad to play with. he slipped walking in their home and iPad was damaged. they now want us to replace iPad. how should we respond?

Why pay for something to which this alleged friend clearly contributed to its happening? (In Virginia, proof of contributory negligence is enough to have a suit dismissed.)
