Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Virginia

i want to file a suit against a contrator who basically took my money and ran. i have not been able to get in touch with him at all. the total lost was 5900 dollars. he did some work but the majority of the work was left undone. the contrat says that the date of completion was suppose to be for august 31 2010. things came up here and there and so the date was exteded verbally until around september 15th. is there any limiitations to the date i can file this in the court system. i heard that i have 6 months from the day the contract was suppose to be complete?
