Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

To make a long story short, I notified my landlord I might be relocated in July (2 weeks after resigning a year lease) where as he replied on the telephone no problem. On sept. 2 I was told to relocate and told him, again on the phone were he now noted I have to pay until May unless he rents it out.

I had a roommate that tried to get on the lease and was told he could not be on the lease and does not qualify. I have been paying and dealing with almost daily calls or texts about how it needs cleaned. I paid for a steam cleaner and gardener to come out. The landlord has habitually called me names, liar, and recently I noted he had to stop talking to me that way or I would get legal help and he told me he was going to clean my clock mother@#$#@$. The unit was flooded in november of 2009 and repairs still had not been done (walls and doors needed painting) at the time when I left. He is not noting I need to formally inform his office of my abandoning the unit. I live 8 hours away now. What can I do? By the way, this is the short version, I have a 3 page letter noting everything else.

You should get an attorney asap, as you told the landlord you would.
