Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Washington

I own and operate an equine breeding and training property. I had a friend/partner that had several horses on my facility and purchased a large quantity of hay and had it delivered to my storage. I assumed it had been paid for. It had not. It was purchased on credit. This was approx. a year ago. The "friend" has disappeared and I am being threatened with a law suit and a lien on my property, if I don't make payment on this debt. I was not a cosigner on the transaction, nor was it made in the name of my business. Am I liable and will I need to retain a lawyer? Does this hay co. have a legal case against me or my business? I very much appreciate any advise you might give. Thank you. Leigh

I'm sorry to say, but it depends on the circumstances. You say "friend/partner"...was it a business partner? If the business partner had apparent authority to order for your business and the hay was then delivered to your business, the hay company may have a claim. It is worth discussing with a lawyer, or you can wait and see they sue you and then find one. But act quickly then as you have a short time to answer a complaint.
