Legal Question in Discrimination Law in Washington

discrimination?

My grandchildren are constituently under scrutiney from everyone from the manager to the maintenance people at their apartment cmplex. Several other families, all minorities, get unduely harrassed. Especially those of ''mixed'' families. This has gotten totally out of control. My daughter wants to move but is under a lease until next year. What can they do?

Re: discrimination?

Housing discrimination based on race is, or course, illegal. What to do next about it would depend on specifically what kind of harassment is taking place and what you mean when you say that your grandchildren are under scrutiny. If the quiet enjoyment of their home is being disturbed but they don't feel threatened, the next step is a little different than if they are being stalked, and do feel threatened, for example.

I have a couple of options for your daughter. She might want to get in touch with the Washington Human Rights Commission, who helps enforce anti-discrimination laws. Their help is free, though they don't act quickly. She might also consult with a private attorney, who can discuss the facts of her case with her in more detail and recommend possible options.
