Legal Question in Personal Injury in Washington

Parental responsibility when minor causes injury

Looking for the RCW or law that states parents are responsible for the cost incurred by their child which caused an injury to another minor on school property?

You are looking for RCW 4.24.190, which you can read at http://www.leg.wa.gov/RCW/index.cfm?section=4.24.190&fuseaction=section.

Note the child must be living with you, the act must be done "willfully or maliciously", and the harm must be as specified.

There may be other things that could make you liable for your own negligence (like, for example, allowing your child to take your loaded gun to school), but this statute is fairly specific.

Go to this site. It is both free and very good for such research. http://search.mrsc.org/nxt/gateway.dll?f=templates&fn=legpage.htm$vid=rcwwac:leg

A good, free research tool, particularly for non-lawyers, is Findlaw, which was taken over not too long ago by West-Tompson, the big legal publisher. Their site is easy to remember; it's just www.findlaw.com -- good luck!
