Nonprofit hospitals can risk their tax exempt status when they fire patients due to poverty. "For profit" hospitals, on the other hand, may not have as much to lose, although some reimbursements for patients served under government entitlement programs could still be jeopardized if they dismiss patients solely due to poverty. I'm not sure which category your local Aurora system falls into, but am hoping that perhaps someone wiser than I, who is reading this post, might know the answer, and post it. Good luck with your surgery!
