Legal Question in Criminal Law in

Age of Sexual Consent

My question is regarding age of sexual consent in canada. I work in an Educationional institute, but in the matainance deptartment and therefore have no contact/control with/of students. Myself and a student are now seeing each other, and I am concered about legal issues that may arrise from this. I have read the fine print regarding the age of consent in ontario, canada and am confused by one thing. It mentions in the document that the age of sexual consent is 14, unless you are in a positiion of trust or authority, in which case it is 18. I don't believe that I fall into that catagory, but would a judge? The student I am dating is 15 (I am 19), and did not know i worked in education untill later on, this is not a problem for either of us. Before this relationship progresses much further, I would like to have an idea of how this would be viewed in court, if a problem ever occured.

Re: Age of Sexual Consent

I am not licencsed to practice law in Canada and therefore have no knowledge of that law; you are very wise to inquire about the appropriateness of the relationship w/this young girl. Contact legal counsel there...in many US jurisdictions, sexual activity with a student of such age would be statutory rape regardless of your position. ..and that's not pretty! I would presume that the educational institution for whom you work has policies covering such activity and these would be taken into consideration by any court, as well. Good to check b4 proceeding further.. . .smart fellow.
