Legal Question in Criminal Law in India

I had sent an email to a person. The email recipient filed a defamation suit against me though my email was not defamatory at all. I apologized for hurting his sentiments inadvertently but he did not withdraw the case.

I received court summons via email. I am working abroad and cannot attend hearing.

Can I send apology letter by registered post/scanned letter with my signature via email to the court to save travelling costs and quash the case against me?

Is the case civil or criminal? The closure of case will depend on nature of suit.

You can engage a lawyer to defend yourself.
