Legal Question in Criminal Law in Canada

My friend is 26 he's talking to a 17 year old. I keep telling him he's gonna get in trouble and he's insisting that its not illegal..what if he sleeps with her?!! This is ridiculous. A speedy answer would be appreciated

The general age of consent in Canada is 16 and it is not a defence for the accused to believe the complainant is under 16 unless the accused has exercised a significant degree of care in establishing his or her belief.

Also there are special provisions that apply where there is some kind trust or other authority relationship between the parties. The age is then 18.
