In practise what is followed is that a muslim male does not usually get punished for bigamy or polygamy. However there are certain debatable questions unresolved with regard to this topic. Punishment should depend on firstly the circumstances in which the male has married the second or third time; and secondly the question whether the second or third marriage is in accordance with the Shariat Rules or not. In case the aforesaid criteria do not meet the male should be punished for bigamy as IPC is a substantive criminal enactment having high credence over all personal and civil laws; but unfortunately until now bigamy for Muslim males remains unpunished.
