Legal Question in Family Law in Lebanon

Hello I am a Muslim -Shitee Lebanese lady , yet I have a Swedish passport . I am planning to get married to a Lebanese Maronite man;most probably in Cyprus, because we are planning to have a civil marriage .

My question is when we get married and strike our sekt from our ID ; does that mean that we are no longer registered with religion only as Lebanese. Will our religion still be registered somewhere else ?

When we plan to have children will the child be registered with no sect , and only as Lebabese? If yes ,how will this affect my child and in which aspects?

My last question is for example if you decide do baptize the child does it has to be registered? Can we baptize the child, yet still all not be registered to a specific sect?

Thank you!

Dear Madam,

Since you are seeking to get married civilly out of Lebanon, there is no need to remove your confession from your ID. You will remain Shiia, and he will remain Maronite, and your marriage will be legally registered in Lebanon. The removal of the community has been advised if you are getting a civil marriage in Lebanon; however, this practice is not applicable any more:the ministry of interior is not accepting to register civil marriages concluded in Lebanon, as there is no law regulating the civil marriage in Lebanon.

Based on the above, when you will have kids, they will follow the confession of their father, and therefore you can baptize them.

We hope that the above answers clearly to your request; for any further information please do address your query to the following email: [email protected], our team would be happy to assist you.
