Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Nigeria

i am a yearly tenant but my landlord gives me a quit notice before my rent is due in may. i had to look for another accommodation but did not get any till october. he is now suing me for the arrears of those four monyhs. am i supposed to pay?

In so far as you were still occupying the premises within the material time, then you are obligated to pay.
