Legal Question in Constitutional Law in Alabama

Secrecy in voting

Is it legal for me to have to verbally disclose my voting party (Democrat or Republican) preference in order to get my voting card during a primary? This was done in the presence of other citizen that had showed up to vote.

Re: Secrecy in voting

It depends on your state. Some sates DO require that you prove your party affiliation. Check with the local voting office (or, your party headquarters) for the specific primary rule. You shouldn't have to do it in a way that allows others to hear, however. That might be a valid Constitutional problem, especially if the public knowledge could subject you to violent reprisal.
