Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Alabama

Elderly mother's debts - who's responsible at death if no money/assets?

My mother is 86. Has 2 Visas with balances and a car loan; all in her name only. However, I am co-owner on her checking account. She has no assets whatsoever (and no Will per the advice of a local attorney); only income is her $1079 monthly SS check. If she were to pass away and there were not enough funds remaining in her checking account to pay the 2 Visa balances and the car loan, would I be responsible for those remaining balances because I have been co-owner of her checking account?

based upon the facts you submitted, I would say "no". Generally you are not personally liable for any debts if you did not sign a contract for them (i.e. car, credit cards). If your mother died the creditor would be allowed to repossess the car however(unless it was paid off by you or your mother).
