Legal Question in Entertainment Law in Alabama

legality of charging fee to turn LPs into clean CDs

We own a small recording studio and occasionally clients ask us if they can pay us to copy their old LPs onto CDs and eliminate the noise. We have the capacity to do this, but we don't know if it's legal.

Pleas site the law if it is legal.

Thank you for your assistance,

Re: legality of charging fee to turn LPs into clean CDs

The following is for your information only. I am not advising you to do anything, but only pointing out the possibilites to your question.

This might violate copyright laws, but the chances of you getting caught and prosecuted by the artists on the LP's are slim. If you are only making one copy for the person, that is one thing. It would be questionable whether this violates law since the person bought the LP and has a right to use it. And since you are only making one copy for the LP holder, the chances are slim of you getting into any trouble. However the possibility exists.
