Time is not the answer. Neglect and issues such as failure to support the child. If a parent fails to visit the child for an extended period or communicate in any form. If you have custody of a child and the parent fails to do these, then if the child is not your biological child, you can always file for adoption in the Probate Court and the standard is 6 months abandonment or failure to provide for the health and welfare. If the child is your biological child, well, basically the State does not bastardize a child and terminate parental rights or paternity or maternity because of the situation. But if you were to remarry, you could allow your new spouse to adopt.
